ChatGPT Ads: What Brands Need to Know
Search is becoming conversational. ChatGPT Ads introduce a new advertising environment where brands can appear while people explore options, compare alternatives and make decisions.

Digital advertising has traditionally followed a familiar sequence: someone searches, sees an ad, clicks and continues to a website.
Conversational AI changes that behaviour. People can now ask a question, refine what they need, compare options and continue exploring without restarting their search every time.
For marketers, this creates a new kind of advertising environment. The opportunity is not simply to place another ad in front of an audience. It is to understand how a brand can become relevant inside a conversation that already has context and intent.
ChatGPT Ads are becoming a real media channel.
ChatGPT Ads began as a pilot and have since expanded into additional markets. Self-service access through Ads Manager is now available in Greece as well as a growing number of international markets.
That changes the conversation for brands. ChatGPT is no longer something marketers only need to consider from an organic visibility or AI-search perspective. Paid visibility is becoming part of the platform too.
What makes ChatGPT Ads different from search advertising?
Search advertising usually begins with a query. A user types a phrase into a search engine and advertisers compete for visibility around that search.
A conversation contains more information. Someone may explain what they are looking for, add constraints, compare several alternatives and clarify what matters most before reaching a decision.
ChatGPT Ads can use signals such as the context and intent of the current conversation, alongside the advertiser's landing page, headline, copy and contextual guidance, to determine relevance.
That means advertisers should not approach the platform as if it were simply another keyword list.
Context matters more than one isolated keyword.
This is probably the most important strategic difference.
A person asking for “the best project management software” may be at a very different stage from someone who explains that they manage a ten-person creative team, need client approvals, want time tracking and are replacing another tool.
The second conversation gives significantly more context. For brands, that creates an opportunity to build messaging around situations, needs and use cases rather than relying only on short search phrases.
Think beyond “Which keywords should we target?” and start asking “In which conversations would our product or service genuinely be useful?”
What does a ChatGPT ad actually look like?
Ads are displayed separately from ChatGPT's answer and are clearly identified as sponsored content. The current ad format can include the advertiser name, headline, description, landing page and creative asset.
This separation matters. Advertising does not influence the answer generated by ChatGPT, and advertisers do not gain access to a user's private conversation.
For brands, trust therefore becomes part of the creative challenge. An ad that feels disconnected from the user's objective is likely to feel intrusive. One that is specific, useful and relevant has a much clearer role.
Creative needs to answer a real need.
Traditional advertising often tries to interrupt attention. Conversational advertising works better when the message helps the user continue what they are already trying to do.
That makes clarity especially important. Instead of broad claims or generic taglines, brands should communicate what they offer, who it is useful for and why it is relevant in that particular situation.
A strong landing page matters for the same reason. The transition from conversation to website should feel like a continuation of the user's journey, not the beginning of a completely different one.
What should brands prepare?
Brands considering ChatGPT Ads should start with the fundamentals rather than treating the platform as an isolated experiment.
- A clear definition of the situations and needs where the brand is relevant.
- Multiple messaging angles based on use cases, not one generic advertising message.
- Landing pages that clearly continue the intent behind the ad.
- Conversion tracking and measurement aligned with meaningful business actions.
- A test-and-learn approach while the platform, formats and buying tools continue to evolve.
Measurement still matters. The context is simply different.
ChatGPT Ads supports campaign buying and measurement across objectives such as views, clicks and supported conversion events.
But early campaigns should not be judged only by whether the platform behaves exactly like Google Ads or Meta Ads. The user journey is different, and the role of the channel may also be different.
Brands need to understand where ChatGPT sits in their wider discovery and decision journey: what happens before the ad, what happens after the click and how the channel interacts with search, social and the website.
So, should every brand start advertising in ChatGPT?
Not automatically.
The right question is whether meaningful conversations are happening around the problem your brand solves, the category you operate in or the decisions your customers are trying to make.
For some brands, the opportunity may sit close to product discovery and comparison. For others, it may be education, consideration or helping someone navigate a complex decision.
As the platform develops, the brands that learn fastest will probably be those that treat it as a new behaviour to understand rather than simply another inventory source.
The search journey is becoming a conversation.
ChatGPT Ads do not remove the role of search, social media or the brand website. They add another environment where discovery, comparison and decision-making can happen.
For marketers, that means thinking beyond where an ad appears and focusing more closely on the context in which someone sees it.
The brands that understand that context early will be better positioned to experiment with conversational advertising as it evolves.
